The Torch

Keeping the flame of freedom burning

This site exists to make the case for personal freedom and responsibility and to steer British political institutions and civic society back to our traditional principles of freedom, personal responsibility and a limited state.

Governments around the world are moving in an increasingly authoritarian and undemocratic direction. This includes the UK Government. Whether it be interventions justified by the response to Covid-19, commitments, taxes and bans driven by the Net Zero agenda or other justifications such as public health, safety or increased sensitivities on free speech – the powers of the state are expanding.

In the UK we have minimal protections against increased state intervention. Without a written constitution our laws can be changed rapidly and with little oversight. Our political and civic leadership are increasingly either unaware or unbothered by this erosion of personal freedom and responsibility – and even in The Conservative Party too many MPs and Peers are willing to sacrifice too much on the flimsy justification that they are currently in power and trust the current leadership.

History shows us that it is a fallacy to believe that “this time it will be different” and Government will not abuse or retain powers accumulated in the last crisis.

This site aims to play a role in making the case for an alternative and in exposing the flawed assumptions behind the latest pretexts for Big Government.

Our hope is to work with like-minded people across the UK and in due course to help steer our civic and political leadership back to a position where they will defend and value personal freedom and responsibility. We will happily applaud those who make the case for freedom and encourage others to support them. We will also keep up our own running commentary on current affairs.

Please do get in touch and support us.
